Unusual baby names are nothing new, but once in a while, a moniker comes along that makes you stop and wonder how such a combination of letters could be real.
Although the inspiration for the name "Abcde" is clear, what's less obvious is its pronunciation. Apparently, it's pronounced "ab-si-dee," which actually has quite a nice ring to it.
While Abcde isn't likely to rival such baby name stalwarts as Emma or Sophia anytime soon, the name isn't quite as unique as you might expect. In fact, since 1990, over 370 girls have been named Abcde, including 32 in 2009 alone.
The name seems to have enjoyed the most popularity in Hawaii, which is especially interesting considering that the Hawaiian alphabet doesn't include the letters B, C, or D.
A rose by any other name ...
- The popularity of the TV show "Game of Thrones" led to 560 baby girls being named "Khaleesi" in 2018 alone.
- According to the Social Security Administration, the most popular name for baby boys in the United States in 2019 was Liam, while for girls it was Olivia.
- Including spelling variations, "Muhammad" is thought to be the world's most common given name, with approximately 150 million men and boys going by that name.
