What Should I Consider When Buying a Waterproof Mattress Pad?

A waterproof mattress pad, or waterproof mattress protector, is a good solution to avoiding mattress stains and moisture from spills or bedwetting. When buying one, consider that it also keeps your mattress free from allergens and dust mites.

Today's waterproof mattress pads do not feel like plastic or cause uncomfortable heat and sweating under the sheets. The protective backing is close to the mattress, not your skin. Padding covers the waterproof backing so all you feel is the padding.

Mosthave cotton or Damask covers. A waterproof mattress pad is machine washable and dryable and does not require as frequent washing as your sheets. If you consider that even one spill can ruin your mattress, then a waterproof pad is a good investment.

This waterproofing makes them particularly useful for those considering purchasing an active cooling mattress pad for hot flashes, as they contain built-in water piping systems attached to a temperature-controlled tank. While these are durable and designed to handle everyday wear and tear, they can prevent water from soaking into your mattress should some component malfunction, leak, or detach.

Because waterproof mattress pads are typically thin, adding one underneath your cooling topper would add very little bulk to your bed while providing must-have protection from wayward water.

Mattresses are difficult to clean and should never be wet as mold and mildew may result if the mattress is not thoroughly dried. Mattress manufacturers stress that the best way to clean a mattress is to vacuum it. A tiny amount of cold water can be added to a mild detergent for spot cleaning, but a mattress should never be saturated with water. Dry cleaning solutions should also never be used as they may damage the mattress materials.

The best way to keep a mattress clean is to protect it with a waterproof mattress pad. Make sure you have the right measurements when you go to purchase a pad. If your bed is a standard size such as twin, double, queen, or king you will probably be able to find the size you need.

You should also consider your waterproofing needs when buying a waterproof mattress pad. While they offer complete protection from stains and wetness, water-resistant pads are treated to only resist wetness. A good quality mattress pad made to protect the mattress from bedwetting usually has an extra lining of rayon felt or other absorbent material along with the regular polyester waterproof backing.

Waterproof mattress pads aren't just good for children and the elderly that have bed-wetting issues.

Our home has a bathroom directly above our main floor bedroom. We never once thought of the potential hazards of this set up. Unfortunately, one sprung leak later and our mattress was completely ruined. Luckily our insurance covered the thousands of dollars it cost to replace our top of the line set.

For those who have a mattress set that you would like to keep safe, a waterproof mattress pad is a good investment. Even if you're bed isn't under a bathroom like ours is, if you aren't sure where your water pipes are running, getting one could save you a lot of angst.

If you have young children, waterproof mattress pads should be a priority purchase and should be used regularly, just like normal sheets. While your child may not wet the bed right away, it is a good idea to keep one until your child is past the general bed wetting age of 5-6.

Sometimes bed wetting is caused by emotional stress, such as a new baby coming into the family, or moving. There are of course, medical considerations as well.

I have found that with waterproof mattress pad, it is better to be safe than sorry, because any liquid on a mattress can really do some serious damage. Waterproof mattress pads are a cheap and easy solution to keeping your mattresses safe.
