Tolnaftate is a medication prescribed for the treatment of fungal infections. It is commonly marketed under the brand names Lamisil®, Tinactin®, and Tinaderm®. Patients with ringworm, jock itch, and athlete's foot may use this drug to suppress an infection. It works by stopping the fungi from reproducing. Tolnaftate is a type of medication called an antifungal and it may be used alone or in conjunction with other medications.
Most patients will use this medication twice daily. This dosage schedule may vary, because dosage strengths are not necessarily the same for every brand. Patients should carefully read the instructions or talk to their pharmacist or doctor before applying the medicine. Improvement should be noticed within three days and patients should continue to use the drug for two weeks after the symptoms dissipate. This is to ensure that the infection is completely gone and does not come back.
Tolnaftate is available as a cream, powder, or spray. Before applying tolnaftate, patients should carefully wash and dry the affected area of skin. Those using the cream should apply just enough of the medicine to cover the area and distribute it evenly. Tolnaftate powder should be sprinkled on the affected area. If the patient has athlete's foot, he should ensure that the medicine gets between the toes and on other affected areas of the foot, as well as inside his shoes and socks.
This antifungal drug is also available in an aerosol form. Those using the aerosol powder should shake the canister and spray the affected area of skin, holding the canister away from the skin. Patients should be careful not to inhale the medicine or spray it near an open flame. After each application of any form of this drug, patients must wash their hands thoroughly.
Before using tolnaftate, patients should talk to their pharmacist or doctor about their other medical conditions. It may be contraindicated for use by those with peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, or any immune system problems. Patients with allergies should discuss them with a doctor prior to use. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also talk to their doctors. This drug is not intended for use by children who are under two years of age.
Most patients will experience no side effects or very minor side effects. Tolnaftate may sometimes cause irritation of the skin. People who suffer an allergic reaction to the antifungal drug may notice tightness in the chest, problems breathing, and swelling of the face, tongue, or lips. They may also experience itching, hives, and a rash. Those who experience an allergic reaction should seek medical help immediately and discontinue use of the drug.
