Hartford, Connecticut is one of America's oldest cities. Founded in 1614, Hartford has a population of little over 100,000 thousand people and a tradition for being the "insurance capital of the world." Hartford also has a large Latino population, mostly of Puerto Rican heritage, whose influence can be seen in many of the festivals and attractions around the city.

One of the main destinations for those visiting Hartford with children is Jonathan's Dream, a 25,000-square-foot playground designed especially for children with disabilities but great for everybody to enjoy. The fenced-in park is safe for all ages and features some of the best swings, towers, and slides ever built. The playground is free and open every day, but plan a visit of at least a few hours to be able to enjoy it all.

Outdoor attractions abound for those visiting Hartford with children. Bushnell Park offers visitors lakes, green open fields, and a century-old carousel. Riverfront Recapture and Park offers great views of the water, historical boat tours, and large, modern playgrounds. Just out of the city is Lake Compounce, America's oldest amusement park and a great destination for those visiting Hartford with children and looking for a thrill.

Those wishing to add art and culture to their trip can head to the Mark Twain's House and Museum when visiting Hartford with children. The 19-room mansion features features seven bathrooms, Tiffany-decorated rooms, and indoor plumbing. Twain also had one of the first residential telephones in the US, and the original one can be seen in the house. A large shop allows those visiting Hartford with children to take home a little bit of history by buying Twain's books, photographs, commemorative gifts, and toys inspired by his books.

Elizabeth Park features the country's oldest rose garden and is a must for families visiting Hartford with children. While little ones may not appreciate the green fields, children over 10 can find many things to explore within the park's boundaries. Hiking trails, birdwalks, greenhouse workshops, and even full-moon tours are open to the kids.
