Terazosin HCL is a type of medication called an alpha blocker that is prescribed for patients who have an enlarged prostate, called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Some people may also use this drug to treat high blood pressure. Terazosin HCL works by relaxing the patient's blood vessels and certain muscles to alleviate symptoms of BPH, such as urinary urgency and difficult or painful urination.
Patients should carefully follow the dosage schedule their doctors give them. Initially, most patients are prescribed a lower dose of the drug to be taken at bedtime. Following this, patients may be instructed to take progressively higher dosages on consecutive days until they reach their maintenance dosage. Some patients may be directed to take a dose once daily, while others will take it twice daily. Terazosin HCL may be taken with or without food.
Some side effects may occur with the use of terazosin HCL to treat an enlarged prostate, which should be reported to the prescribing physician if they become severe. Patients may experience decreased sexual ability, weight gain, and nausea. Fatigue, weakness, and blurred vision may occur, along with back pain and a runny or stuffy nose. Some patients have reported pain, numbness, or tingling in the hands and feet, as well as swelling of the lower extremities and hands.
More serious side effects from terazosin HCL will require immediate medical attention. These can include rapid or pounding heartbeat, sensation of fluttering in the chest, or feeling faint. A painful erection that lasts for four or more hours also requires urgent medical care. Signs of a possible allergic reaction can include hives, facial swelling, and problems breathing.
Certain precautions should be taken while patients are undergoing this treatment. Terazosin HCL can cause dizziness, so patients should rise slowly from a prone or sitting position. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided, because these can worsen some side effects. Before undergoing any type of surgery, including dental surgery, the surgeon should be informed that the patient is using this drug. The doctor will likely order periodic checks of the patient's prostate and blood pressure while they are taking the medication.
Before using this drug to treat BPH or high blood pressure, patients must disclose their other medical conditions, medications, and supplements. Women using terazosin HCL for high blood pressure should discuss risks with their doctors if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may be contraindicated for use by those with a history of prostate cancer. This medicine may also interact with other drugs, including erectile dysfunction medications and drugs for high blood pressure.
