Rohypnol is a brand name for the drug flunitrazepam, which is a depressant that is often known as the "date rape drug." This is because this sedative often easily dissolves in liquid, making it possible for sexual predators to slip it into the drink of their victim undetected. The most common effects of Rohypnol include dizziness, drowsiness, lack of motor control, and the inability to remember some events that may occur while on the drug. Some people use this drug recreationally, in which case they may crush it up and snort it, dissolve tablets in liquid and inject the mixture, or just swallow the pill whole. Rohypnol is not legal for use in the United States, but it is sometimes prescribed in other countries to treat insomnia.
Those attracted to Rohypnol as a recreational drug often combine it with other substances, including alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. It is known for relaxing the muscles, though it also often results in drowsiness, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and general confusion, all of which may begin 15 minutes after ingestion and continue for 12 or more hours. It is physically addictive, leading to withdrawal symptoms when usage is stopped. Rohypnol can be particularly dangerous when the drug user combines it with other recreational drugs, or attempts to drive while under its influence since it slows the reaction time. Additionally, those who inject it can put themselves at risk for diseases spread through contact with blood, including HIV and hepatitis B and C.
One of the most notorious uses for Rohypnol is as a date rape drug, primarily since the sedative makes it difficult for victims to walk, talk, or even remember the sexual assault. In the past, the pill could not usually be detected when placed in drinks because it dissolved clear, but the updated version of the pill usually turns the liquid blue as it dissolves. Of course, some sexual predators still use it in alcoholic drinks that are blue, or even in any drink inside dark rooms, such as clubs or bars. Despite the number of rape cases in which Rohypnol has reportedly been used, a relatively small amount of victims have been able to come forward immediately after the event due to a fuzzy memory of the experience. Additionally, some people willingly take the drug without knowledge of its effects, and then may feel too ashamed or confused to report any sexual assault occurring afterward since they did consent to taking the sedative.
