What Is Lifestyle Coaching?

Also known as life coaching, lifestyle coaching is meant to help clients recognize and achieve personal goals. These goals are sometimes fitness-, career-, or relationship-orientated. Most lifestyle coaches are not therapists, and therefore do not provide counseling, but they can usually suggest a therapist if they believe a client needs one. Lifestyle coaches typically charge per hour, and their prices are often on par with or exceeding the cost of a licensed therapist.

Lifestyle wellness coaches give their clients instructions on exercise, nutrition, and counseling. This type of lifestyle coaching is sometimes available for free through a person’s insurance company or place of employment. The general purpose of a lifestyle coach for wellness is to curb bad habits, encourage the client to exercise, and help solve fitness related problems. A wellness coach may also offer tips on how to better plan meals or even give clients a full meal plan.

Career coaches often help their clients with many aspects of work life. For example, if the client is unemployed or dissatisfied with his or her current line of work, the career coach helps decide what type of position the client is looking for. Then, the career coach helps the client devise a plan for gaining the desired type of position, in addition to helping the client stick with and execute that plan. If a career coach’s client is satisfied with his or her job, the coach may be tasked to help the client interact within the workplace environment more effectively.

Relationship lifestyle coaching can help people find a partner or get along better with their current partners. The coaching often takes place in person, but can occur over the Internet or phone. Clients might be given workbooks, practice sessions, and tips on how to make themselves more available for new or current partners. Although not as well-regarded in some places, another kind of relationship coach is a pickup artist, who teaches men and women pickup lines and helps them learn body language.

The price of lifestyle coaching varies depending on the location and the coach. In general, this type of coaching is often very expensive, and not something the average person can afford on a frequent basis. It is common for a client to pay per hour, but some lifestyle coaches allow clients to pay for one-time sessions. These sessions can take place by email or phone, and typically include a follow-up email or phone call once the client has followed the coach’s suggestions.
