Eyelash tinting is the use of dyes to color eyelashes. Although eyelash tinting does not take the place of lash-thickening mascaras or false eyelashes, it can make the lashes appear darker and give those who have undergone the procedure the look of wearing eye makeup even when they have not applied any cosmetics. Many salons and spas offer this service, although some consumer advocates have cautioned the public against the use of eyelash dye, as it can have possible long-term effects, including eyelid swelling and even blindness.
The process of eyelash tinting is not significantly different than any other type of hair color procedure. Typically, an individual or salon professional will apply eyelash dye with a small brush to the eyelashes of the person undergoing the tinting process. After several minutes, the eyelashes will be rinsed. The result is usually subtle, yet noticeable, and can give the person who had undergone the tinting some definition around the eyes. The procedure is often desired by individuals who would prefer not to have to wear makeup every day or who engage in sports or activities that can cause makeup to quickly wear off.
Many people undergo eyelash tinting as part of receiving eyebrow grooming services. Some salons and cosmetics stores offer eyebrow waxing or threading and may include both eyelash and eyebrow tinting in their menu of services. While eyebrow tinting may be a more commonly performed service, as many people will have their eyebrows tinted when they get their hair colored, eyelash tinting is often an option as well. It should be noted, however, that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any permanent dyes for use on eyelashes or eyebrows. The FDA also warns people against using hair dyes on both eyelashes and eyebrows.
For many makeup experts, eyelash tinting is not considered to be worth its risks. This is particularly true because, while the process enhances the eyelashes, it does not have anywhere near the effect of a good-quality mascara. Many individuals who tint their eyelashes still find that they need to use mascara to achieve long, thick lashes that really frame the eyes. For these individuals, eyelash tinting may provide a slightly more put-together look in the morning or when they go out without makeup, but their tinted eyelashes will otherwise need to be covered up with mascara for a more striking effect.
