Choline fenofibrate is the active ingredient in the cholesterol medication known generically as fenofibric acid, which is sold under the brand names Trilipix® and Fibricor®. This medication is generally used for the management of high LDL cholesterol as a support for lifestyle changes to help reduce triglycerides and increase the quantity of HDL cholesterol in the blood. Typically, it is prescribed in conjunction with statin drugs, such as Lipitor®, Crestor®, and Zocor®.
This medication is used to reduce the levels of a fatty acid in the blood that, if left unchecked, could increase the risk of atherosclerosis. In general, doctors recommend using choline fenofibrate as a way to supplement lifestyle changes such as a low-fat diet, frequent exercise, and quitting smoking. People who use choline fenofibrate should not drink alcohol due to the increased danger of liver damage.
Trilipix® or Fibricor® is contraindicated for certain types of people. It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. People with hypothyroidism, diabetes, or diseases of the kidney, gallbladder, or liver might not be good candidates for this drug. The possibility of moderate to severe side effects can be greater in older adults. Serious side effects of this drug can include fever, chest pain, darkened urine, vomiting, fatigue, or abnormal bruising.
This drug is also known to have possible negative drug interactions with a variety of prescription and over-the-counter medications. These can include certain antibiotics, beta blockers, antifungal medications, seizure control medications, antidepressants, cyclosporine, and diuretics. It also includes hormone replacement medications and hormone-based birth control. Blood thinning medications such as warfarin or ibuprofen can also have dangerous interactions with choline fenofibrate.
When taking choline fenofibrate to improve cholesterol, it is important to maintain certain dietary restrictions such as not eating high-fat meals. This medication can be ingested with food or on an empty stomach. It should be taken with a full glass of water. Choline fenofibrate must not be taken within four hours of certain other prescription medications, including cholestyramine (brand name Questran®), colesevelam (brand name Welchol®), or colestipol (brand name Colesta®). In general, it is not a problem to take choline fenofibrate at the same time as a statin drug.
The maximum dose of this medication, which is offered in a delayed release capsule, is 135 mg daily. Individual dosage will depend on the patient's overall health circumstances. This drug should be stored in a dry place away from sources of heat, as well as away from children.
