BenzaClin® is a brand name for the combination of the medications clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. These are topical antibiotics that are used to treat acne by killing the bacteria that causes it. In the US, this acne treatment is available by prescription only.
Patients should clean the affected area of skin with warm water and a mild cleanser, rinse with warm water, and gently pat the skin dry. BenzaClin®, which is sold in the form of a gel, may then be spread in a very thin layer over the skin. Patients may use a cotton swab or a finger to distribute the gel. People who use a finger to apply BenzaClin® should wash their hands carefully afterward. Those who notice a white film on the skin after application have used too much of the gel at once.
BenzaClin® is typically applied twice daily, usually in the morning and evening. Those who experience mild side effects from the use of this acne medication may reduce the usage. The patient must be careful not to allow the gel to contact the eyes, mouth, or nose. He should also be aware that the gel can bleach fabric and hair.
Some side effects from the use of BenzaClin® may occur. Patients may experience red, peeling, or dry skin, as well as itching or general irritation. These effects may range from mild to severe. Should they become bothersome, the patient should contact the prescribing physician for further instruction.
Serious side effects as a result of this acne treatment are rare, however if they occur, the patient must call his doctor immediately. These can include severe diarrhea and stomach pain or cramps. The patient may also notice mucus or blood in his stool. He may observe alterations in the appearance of his nails or skin, which may indicate a possible fungal infection.
Special precautions should be taken to protect the skin while a person is using BenzaClin®. A moisturizer should be used following each application, and patients should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, wear protective clothing, and apply sunscreen daily, as BenzaClin® can make the skin more vulnerable to sunlight. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss possible risks with their doctors.
Not all patients may be able to use BenzaClin® safely. Those with a history of colitis, as well as people who have previously experienced severe diarrhea and stomach pain while taking antibiotics may be unable to use it. People who are allergic to benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics, such as lincomycin and clindamycin, should not use this acne treatment.
