Arixtra® is a medication administered via injection to help prevent the formation of blood clots in the veins and arteries. Considered an anticoagulant because of its ability to block a specific agent responsible for the formation of clots, it is typically prescribed for individuals at risk of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. This can include those who have undergone surgery and are facing a prolonged period of being bedridden, one of the major causes of deep vein thrombosis in otherwise healthy individuals.
When clots form in the veins and arteries, they put an individual at risk for pulmonary embolism. Clots typically form in other areas of the body, then break free and travel to the lungs through the bloodstream. This can result in chest pains and difficulty breathing; when left untreated, the condition can be life-threatening. It can also develop without warning and in individuals who are otherwise healthy. Administration of anticoagulants such as Arixtra® can help prevent problems before they arise, especially when an individual is put in a situation conducive to the creation of clots.
One of the main agents in the formation of blood clots is Factor Xa. Arixtra® works by targeting only this agent, and prevents its formation. By taking out this single link in the chain of clot formation, it helps prevent clots from forming.
Arixtra® is commonly used for patients at risk for developing deep vein thrombosis, a condition brought on by long periods of inactivity. While it can be used to help keep clots from forming, it can also be prescribed to individuals who have already been diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. Usually given in a medical center by health professionals, Arixtra® is often administered with another drug called warfarin sodium. Together, these medications can be successful in not only keeping clots from forming, but also in breaking up those that have already developed.
The generic name for Arixtra® is fondaparinux, and use of the medication can result in some side effects. Occasionally, side effects may manifest themselves as an allergic reaction to the drug, and the site where it is injected can become swollen, red, or irritated, as is common with any injection. Some individuals will break out in hives or a rash after being injected. Serious side effects that are rare but should be reported to a health professional include weakness or fainting, abnormal bleeding, or confusion and disorientation.
