Asmanex Twisthaler® is a brand name of the generic medication mometasone inhalation powder. This aerosol drug, administered by inhalation, helps relieve and prevent symptoms of asthma, such as shortness of breath and wheezing. Since this medication is not fast-acting, it should not be used for immediate relief of an asthma attack. Rather, a patient will use it to help reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks. An Asmanex Twisthaler®, which contains a corticosteroid, works by easing the swelling of the airways.
Typically, a patient will be prescribed one dose daily in each nostril, which should be taken at about the same time each day. Those who do not need to use an Asmanex Twisthaler® year-round will typically begin their course of medication two to four weeks before the pollen season begins. The medication may take one to two weeks to fully work.
Patients should gently blow their noses before using the device. While holding the Asmanex Twisthaler® upright, the patient should remove the cap and fully exhale. He will then place the mouthpiece completely into his mouth and take a deep breath quickly. The patient must then remove the mouthpiece and hold his breath for 10 seconds before slowly exhaling. To lower the risk of developing a yeast infection in the mouth, the patient should rinse his mouth with water or mouthwash after each use, and then spit.
Possible side effects may occur as a result of using the Asmanex Twisthaler®. Patients may experience headache, nausea, and vomiting. Decreased appetite, stuffy nose, and sinus swelling may occur. Flu-like symptoms have been reported, such as fever and chills. Some patients have also developed stomach pain and indigestion.
Serious side effects from the use of the Asmanex Twisthaler® require a doctor's immediate attention. These can include weakness, white sores or a rash in the mouth, and vision changes. Wheezing, a yeast infection of the throat or nose, and chest pain may also occur. Fainting, irregular heartbeat, and shakiness have been reported. Some patients have experienced muscle or bone pain, unusual changes in mood or behavior, and new or worsened problems breathing.
Children under the age of four should only use an Asmanex Twisthaler® with extreme caution. The drug may interfere with the growth rate of children and teenagers, so the doctor will need to regularly monitor their growth. All patients may periodically undergo tests to check lung function. In addition, patients should avoid exposure to sick people while using the drug, as it can suppress the immune system.
All patients should disclose their other medical conditions to the prescribing physician, such as whether they are pregnant or breastfeeding. Allergies, a recent infection, and active or inactive tuberculosis may preclude one from using an Asmanex Twisthaler®. Other medications and supplements should also be disclosed, especially anticonvulsants or other corticosteroids.
