Ambien® is a branded form of the sedative drug zolpiden, frequently used to treat insomnia. One of the most commonly prescribed brands of sedative, Ambien® is generally given to patients as a limited prescription to treat a temporary condition of sleeplessness or insomnia. It is important to fully understand the implications and side effects of Ambien® before taking, as well as to be sure to stick to the prescription length and dosage requirements to avoid complications.
This form of zolpiden is produced by Sanofi-Aventis US LLC, a large pharmaceutical company that operates out of Bridgewater, New Jersey and Paris, France. The product comes in two oral pill forms, the original Ambien® and Ambien CR®. The second version is a controlled release variety that is meant to help users fall asleep, then stay asleep more comfortably. The original version was approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 1992, while the extended release formula was approved in 2005.
The drug is often prescribed to treat insomnia, a persistent inability to sleep or rest peacefully. Insomnia is characterized both by the inability to fall asleep at night and the inability to stay asleep throughout the night. It may be caused by many factors, including increased emotional or physical stress, hormonal imbalance, environmental factors such as light pollution, or other medical conditions.
Ambien® has a profound soporific effect and should only be taken when the user has time to dedicate to sleep. Usually taken at bedtime, the drug can impair judgment, motor skills, and perception abilities if taken during the day. Most medical experts recommend only taking the drug if the user has at least eight hours to sleep.
One of the most common side effects is increased listlessness or sleepiness that lingers throughout the day after taking the drug the previous night. Some experts recommend avoiding driving or other mechanical or dangerous tasks until it is clear how the body is reacting to the medication. Some studies have shown that the elderly are more prone to this sedative effect. Diarrhea, headache, nausea, and muscle weakness are also common side effects.
Some people have an allergy to the medication that can be dangerous if untreated. Experts warn that a person must stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical help if shortness of breath, hives, or swelling occurs. Unusual thoughts, such as thoughts of suicide or extreme depression, may also occur and require that medication be changed or dosage altered. In some cases, Ambien® can also be habit forming. Consider asking a friend or partner to keep an eye out for any behavioral changes or signs of addiction while the drug is being used.
Some studies have found that the medication may have other applications, though it should never be used if not prescribed for a specific condition. Some evidence shows that there may be a link between the drug and the healing or recovery of patients with traumatic brain injury or those in a vegetative state. Additionally, the drug is sometimes used to treat restless leg syndrome.
