Aeschynanthus is a genus of herb, containing close to 200 different species. The herbs are found in tropical regions of Asia as well as on islands such as New Guinea. Even though all the species are tropical herbs, there is a large variation in the appearance and size of the plants. Usually, the plants require warm and moist conditions to grow effectively, although it’s often important that the soil has time to drain between being watered.
The leaves of Aeschynanthus plants vary depending on the species. For example, some have hard, shiny leaves. Others, such as the A.hildebrandii species, have much softer leaves. Variations in the size of the stem and leaves are also common.
There also is a large variation in the flowers. Colors of various species include bright red, orange and yellow. This variation is one of the reasons why the plants are so popular amongst indoor gardeners, despite being difficult to grow.
Even though the plants are found in warm, tropical regions, they are capable of growing in cooler areas. In fact, certain species may grow more successfully in a cooler climate and after colder winters. The plants, however, do not survive well in overly wet conditions. There is some variation in requirements for specific species in regards to temperature, moisture and humidity. Experts at garden centers can guide customers through the various recommended care regimens.
One example of an Aeschynanthus species is The Lipstick Plant. This species has dark, pink flowers, which bloom in a way that’s similar to the opening of a lipstick. The plant is natively found in South East Asia, but has been cultivated to grow in a number of places around the world. To bloom, the species needs to be in a shaded area that doesn’t get direct sunlight, and should not be exposed to any frost or ice during the winter.
There are a few essential requirements for growing Aeschynanthus plants indoors. First, the temperature should be kept warm during the summer months. During winter, it is advisable to reduce the temperature, as this can provide a greater bloom during the next season. Fertilizer should be used during the spring, when the plant begins to grow again.
Throughout the summer months, Aeschynanthus plants need constant watering, but the the soil should be allowed to dry between waterings. In the winter, however, much less water is required. During summer, the plants will usually benefit from being sprayed with mist on a regular basis as well.
