A spray tan booth is an area similar to a shower stall, with jets mounted on the wall at varying heights. The jets spray tanning lotion onto the person in the spray tan booth, which will then develop within a few minutes into a fake tan. After being sprayed with the tanning solution, it is recommended that one towel off quickly to prevent any drips or streaks, as well as to wipe tanning spray off the hands and the bottom of the feet, which are good indicators of a fake tan.

Sometimes a spray tan booth will spray both sides of the body simultaneously, and sometimes it will be necessary to turn around in order to get both sides of the body. Instructions will be provided by the operators of the spray tan. A spray tan is significantly more expensive than applying tanning lotion at home, but it is also much easier and the results tend to last longer. People often choose to get spray tans prior to a special event such as a wedding.

Of course, getting a fake tan from a spray tan booth is much safer than laying outside in the sun or in a tanning bed to get a tan. There is no risk of sun damage or skin cancer from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, and the spray tan will only dye the top layer of skin. It will gradually fade and wash off over a few days to a week. Keep in mind that a spray tan offers no protection from the sun, however, so it is still important to wear sunblock to avoid burns.

Another benefit to a spray tan booth is that it is a stand up booth; there is no need to lay down on a tanning bed which may not have been cleaned well after the last customer, which could lead to skin irritation. Sunless tanning is an excellent choice for those who want to get a healthy looking, summery tan without sun exposure. Of course, a spray tan is not the only option, however.

Sunless tanning sprays and lotions are available for use at home. Some develop immediately, while others gradually get darker over the period of a few days. In addition, some just choose to apply bronzer to the face and wash it off at the end of the day; this can give the skin a nice sun-kissed appearance that still looks very natural.
