A seaweed body wrap is a substance consisting of seaweed and other ingredients that are mixed together and applied topically or wrapped around a specific area of the body. The wrap is generally made by mixing seaweed powder with fragrant essential oils, clay or Dead Sea mud. After preparation, the mixture has a thick, paste-like consistency. Offered in many health spas or sold as a kit, a seaweed body wrap is applied to the skin for the purpose of cleansing or detoxification. Some people use seaweed body wraps to lose inches or to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Some seaweed wraps are also combined with other ingredients to improve circulation.

In addition to improving skin tone and reducing cellulite, many experts claim seaweed body wraps are an effective way to lose inches from the hips, thighs and waist. Professional health spas offer treatments in weekly sessions. Results may vary, but some individuals see benefits after four to six weeks. Professional spa body wrap treatments tend to be quite expensive though, which is why many people opt to treat themselves at home.

It is not necessary to visit a spa to receive the benefits of seaweed body wraps, as many seaweed products are sold at health food stores and beauty supply outlets. Seaweed body wrap treatments are also sold as easy to apply kits. Many of these applications contain only organic ingredients. Some people make their own do it yourself seaweed body wrap at home with natural ingredients.

Many individuals who are bothered by the appearance of cellulite may prefer to use a seaweed body wrap instead of more expensive cellulite treatments. When purchased as a kit, the body wrap will typically include ingredients such as seaweed and other plant extracts. Deep sea mud or clay may also be used, in addition to a rich supply of vitamins. Skin that is treated with the wrap will become smoother and free of toxins, as the seaweed has a natural detoxifying effect. Seaweed body wraps are also moisture-rich, so they can hydrate and revitalize dry skin.

Some seaweed body wrap kits also contain firming lotion to be applied after a treatment. A bar of seaweed body soap may also be included in the kit. The soap may be used as a replacement for moisturizing cleaners. Before applying the body wrap and firming lotion, it is recommended to gently exfoliate skin using a loofah pad or sponge.

To improve circulation and maximize detoxification benefits, some seaweed body wraps also include algae. A combination algae and seaweed body wrap can cleanse away harmful toxins, revealing healthier, more vibrant skin tone. When applied at a health spa, the wrap will typically be applied for up to one hour.
