What Factors Affect Infant Motrin® Dosage?

Infant Motrin® dosage is determined by the weight of the baby. It is registered for the treatment of pain and fever in babies aged from six to 23 months old. It contains ibuprofen and is in the form of drops for easy administration to infants. In most countries the preparation is available over-the-counter and does not require a doctor's prescription. Other ibuprofen-containing products suitable for infants are available under different trade names according to country and manufacturer.

When determining Infant Motrin® dosage it is necessary to weigh the infant. While the Infant Motrin® dosage may also be determined by the age of the infant, it is preferable to determine the dose by weight. The recommended dose should never be exceeded. Usually the Infant Motrin® dosage may be given every six to eight hours depending on response, but it should never be used more than four times a day.

Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Infant Motrin® is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to treat fever and minor pain associated with, amongst others, toothache, colds and flu and headaches. Caution is advised in infants with a family history of allergy to NSAIDs, such as aspirin, and it is completely contraindicated in those with known NSAID allergy. Should signs of allergy develop after using the medication, urgent medical attention should be sought. The signs of an allergic reaction may include rash or hives, redness, wheezing and facial swelling.

It is often difficult to get infants to take medication. The Infant Motrin® dosage is given using a syringe which is supplied with the medicine. It is advisable to use the syringe supplied so that the correct dosage is given. Using the table supplied with the medication, the correct amount should be drawn up into the syringe and squirted slowly and gently into the infant's mouth towards the inside of the mouth.

Interactions may occur with other medications and its use is not advised in infants with some clinical conditions. Any other medications and conditions should be discussed with the doctor or pharmacist before giving Infant Motrin® to an infant. Should the infant not respond within a day of using the drug, doctor's advice should also be sought. The drug should not be used for an extended period of time.

As with any medication, adverse effects may occur, including gastrointestinal upsets and bleeding. Should adverse effects be severe, the doctor should be contacted. All medication should be locked away safely, out of reach of children.
