A mobile beautician performs cosmetology services for his or her clients in places other than a salon or spa. He or she typically visits clients in their homes, at their workplace, or in hotels. Many people hire a mobile beautician to provide personal appearance services for special occasions, such as weddings. Mobile beauticians may limit their off-site services for logistical reasons as well as to meet beauty licensing laws in the jurisdiction where they practice. Some salons may also restrict the ability of their stylists to work outside the salon.
While many people receive cosmetology services, including hairstyling, facials, and manicures, in a salon or spa, it is not always convenient for people to schedule appointments and travel to these establishments. Some cosmetologists, nail technicians, and aestheticians now make house calls to clients who find it difficult to visit a salon or nail shop. In some cases, a mobile beautician works for a brick-and-mortar salon that handles out-call bookings on behalf of its staff. In other cases, the beautician may operate entirely outside of a salon and takes bookings directly from clients.
Other situations in which somebody may hire a mobile beautician include circumstances in which the client is ill or disabled and unable to easily travel or move around comfortably in a salon environment. Many wedding parties often hire makeup artists and hairdressers to provide services at the bride's home or the wedding venue so as to not add additional transit and logistical concerns to an already busy wedding day. Similarly, individuals who are appearing at special events may choose to pay for services in their hotel rooms instead of traveling to a salon in an unfamiliar city.
Consumers of salon services should take time to verify that a mobile beautician holds a cosmetology license or the appropriate license for each service that he or she offers. In addition, the consumer should also ask about the cost of having beauty services performed off-site. In some cases, a mobile beautician may have to charge more than he or she would in a salon because of transportation costs and logistics of moving specialized equipment. Individuals who are interested in enjoying the services of a mobile beautician should ask at their salon if it is possible for staff members to provide services in a client’s home. Some salons may not advertise in-home services, but may be pleased to arrange them at a customer’s request.
