A hair and makeup artist applies cosmetics, and cuts or styles the hair of an individual who is about to go to an event or make a public appearance. In some instances, a hair and makeup artist may be employed by a television station, a theater group or a celebrity. Other people working in this field provide services to a wide range of clients that may include politicians, brides-to-be and other individuals who prefer to have their hair and make-up done by a professional.

Few colleges offer formal degree programs for those wishing to work in this field. Some community colleges do offer short-term vocational training courses for cosmetologists, and people who attend these sessions learn some of the skills that a hair and make-up artist must possess such as styling techniques and skin care tips. In many instances, a trainee hair and makeup artist will learn his or her trade while working as an apprentice alongside an experienced cosmetologist.

A hair and makeup artist employed by a theatrical group or television company must meet with the production director and designer to find out about the type of makeup and wigs or hairstyles that the performers require. In some instances, these professionals use generic cosmetic products on the performers but in other instances, the artist may have to work alongside special effects designers and costume makers; often they must find ways to combine props, outfits and makeup so that an actor looks like a particular creature of character. Some people employed in this field develop new technologies while trying to prepare actors to play unusual looking characters.

Many people working in this field are concerned with preparing people to attend events such as weddings or graduation ceremonies. In such instances, the artist will meet with a client and review a portfolio that contains a wide variety of hairstyles and types of make up. The stylist attempts to find a tone of makeup that will enhance the client's natural looks and cover any blemishes. Additionally, artists must be sensitive to any skin conditions or allergies that the client may have in order to ensure that the application of makeup will not cause a rash or any other type of reaction.

Some well-known makeup artists work exclusively with well-known celebrities. These individuals may meet with their clients each morning since these individuals are constantly in the public eye and want to look at their best. The artist will wash, cut, brush and style the client's hair and apply any necessary makeup including eyeliner, mascara or blush. When a celebrity decides to change his or her image, the hair and makeup artist usually plays a key role in designing the new look.
