Most people encounter periods of time during which they are unable to sleep, and for others, falling and staying asleep can be a constant struggle. Though there are several ways to combat sleeplessness, many people choose sleep aid medications. There are several options available that may be beneficial, including prescription, non-prescription, even herbal supplements. Unfortunately, most medications come with some potentially negative reactions. Depending upon the chosen option, sleep aid side effects can range from allergic reactions to sleepwalking, dry mouth to constipation, and some may even result in drug dependency.
In severe or persistent cases of sleeplessness, a stronger sleeping aid may be prescribed by a physician. Although many people find this type to be more effective than over-the-counter options, they often come with a number of side effects. Prescription sleep aid side effects can vary, but many can cause dizziness as well as drowsiness that can linger into the next day. Coordination problems, digestive upsets and a feeling of nervousness are also quite common with prescription sleep aids.
Despite the fact that these types of sleep aids are not typically as strong as their prescription-based counterparts, over-the-counter sleep aid side effects can be just as problematic. Many of the over-the-counter options may cause allergic reactions that can cause a rash, hives or itching, as well as respiratory complications and swelling in the face or mouth. Some may cause heart issues, such as palpitations, or a lowering of blood pressure, while others may create an overproduction of mucus in the throat or nose. In some cases, over-the-counter sleep aids may worsen the symptoms of certain conditions such as glaucoma or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Herbal supplements are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to prescription and over-the-counter remedies. Despite this, they may also come with a number of reactions. Vivid dreams or nightmares, grogginess, and stomach upset are some of the most common herbal sleep aid side effects. Some of the more severe reactions can include liver damage, shakiness, and an allergic reaction that is similar to that of over-the-counter sleeping aids.
One of the more worrisome sleep aid side effects is dependency. Not all sleeping aids will cause dependency, so it is important to discuss the use of these medications with a medical professional. If a patient is prescribed a drug that is known to cause this side effect, he or she may be advised to stop the medication after a certain period of time.
