Tetracycline is a medication that is often used in treatment of bacterial infections, though in some cases it may also be necessary for the treatment of acne and other skin conditions. In some cases, Tetracycline use has been linked to the development of digestive distress. Other side effects of Tetracycline includes general malaise, sun sensitivities, and the development of an allergic reaction. Since most side effects of Tetracycline use are serious, those who experience an allergic reaction should seek medical help as soon as possible.

Digestive distress is one of the most common side effects of Tetracycline, though it can often vary substantially in severity from patient to patient. In most cases, symptoms of digestive distress can range from conditions as minor as a stomach ache, to serious issues such as diarrhea, nausea, and indigestion. Typically, these symptoms are most severe within a few hours of taking the medication, and often decrease in severity over the course of the day. Individuals who have been prescribed Tetracycline and experience an increase in the severity of these symptoms may want to consider consulting with their physician or a pharmacist in order to determine if alternative medications are available.

General malaise has been found to be another of the common side effects of Tetracycline. Typically, these feelings of malaise include a low-grade fever, sore throat, or dull headache. In most cases, these symptoms are easily treated with over-the-counter painkillers, though prescription medications may be needed in some cases.

For some, side effects of Tetracycline use may include sun sensitivities. Studies have found that individuals who have been prescribed Tetracycline are more prone to the development of sunburn than those who are not currently taking the medication. Patients who are using Tetracycline, therefore, should not only limit sun exposure as much as possible, but should also consider applying sunscreen even during low exposure days in order to prevent painful burns. Individuals who have been prescribed Tetracycline should also use lip balms with sunscreen or other types of lip protection in order to prevent blistering on the lips.

Research suggests that the development of an allergic reaction is another common side effect of Tetracycline. An allergic reaction can be quite serious in some cases, and therefore should be treated immediately. Patients who experience difficulty breathing, swelling in the face or extremities, or have a rash should consult with medical professionals as soon as possible. Failure to do so can, in some cases, be life-threatening.

My brother's teeth got permanently stained from this medication. His teeth look gray now. He was taking it for acne and he was on it for a long time. Apparently, stained teeth are a common symptom during long tetracycline treatments. But what is he going to do about them now?

Has anyone else developed gray teeth from tetracycline?

@SarahGen-- Are the cramps and diarrhea for a short while after you take the tablets or does it go on for hours?

If the symptoms last for a very short time after you take the tablets and then stop, these are common side effects of antibiotics.

If the symptoms are persistent, you need to tell your doctor right away. Persistent cramps, nausea and diarrhea can be a sign that bacteria have become resistant to this medication. It can cause severe side effects. You doctor needs to evaluate your condition right away and determine what to do about your treatment. Try not to take medications for the diarrhea. Call up your doctor now.

So is it normal to have stomach cramps and diarrhea from this medication? I've been taking tetracycline for four days now and I've had these issues every single day. I don't know if I should continue to take it or if I should quit it.
