Ketoprofen belongs to a group of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Similar to other NSAIDs, ketoprofen is prescribed to treat inflammation, swelling, and pain that accompany conditions such as arthritis. Although ketoprofen can be beneficial, there are also side effects that can occur. Common ketoprofen side effects include gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and bleeding disturbances. Ketoprofen can also cause drowsiness, nervousness, and insomnia.
Gastrointestinal disturbances are the most common ketoprofen side effects. These disturbances include heartburn, abdominal cramps, and indigestion. Excess gas, loss of appetite, and nausea can also occur. Some patients experience diarrhea or constipation as well.
Some ketoprofen side effects may take the form of cardiovascular disturbances. NSAIDS, including ketoprofen, may cause an increase in the risk of strokes or heart attacks. Patients who are taking ketoprofen for long-term treatment are more vulnerable that those who take ketoprofen for only a short period. Ketoprofen can cause a rapid heart rate and widening of the blood vessels.
In some patients, common ketoprofen side effects have included bleeding trouble. Blood appearing in the urine, vomiting or coughing blood, and bloody stools are possible. Additionally, frequent nosebleeds can occur, particularly with a higher ketoprofen dose.
Extremely serious ketoprofen side effects are possible. Ketoprofen has been known to cause stomach ulcers. Intestinal holes, called perforations, have been reported. Liver damage is also possible and is a risk associated with NSAIDs, including ketoprofen.
When a patient does not experience any of the more serious ketoprofen side effects, there are other less serious common side effects that will often be experienced. Insomnia, nervousness, and headaches can occur. It is also possible to experience ringing in the ears, dizziness, or drowsiness.
Ketoprofen side effects are generally associated with the dosage of ketoprofen that is being taken. When taken in low doses, the side effects of ketoprofen are usually minimal. Typically, patients experience mild stomach discomfort and nausea that subsides with continued use. Larger doses, however, can increase side effects and their intensity and also increase the risks of ketoprofen.
If ketoprofen side effects become bothersome or do not abate, the prescribing physician should be notified. Any new side effects should also be reported. Allergic reactions, evident by experiencing trouble breathing and hives, require immediate medical attention. Vision disturbances and depression should also be reported to the physician and require a change in the dose or removal from the medication completely.
