What Are the Most Common Colloidal Silver Side Effects?

Colloidal silver is a fluid that consists of tiny particles of metallic silver placed into water. This substance is often used as a natural remedy for medical issues such as bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, oral and lung-related illnesses, and simple cuts or sunburns. Although many people mistakenly believe that natural remedies are harmless, some may cause undesirable reactions. Some of the most common colloidal silver side effects may include skin discoloration, immune system dysfunction, or possible birth defects.

One of the most common and widely known colloidal silver side effects is the development of a condition known as argyria. When a person is improperly or chronically exposed to silver, it begins to accumulate in the skin and organs. The result of this accumulation is a distinct and irreversible gray or blue-gray discoloration of the skin. Colloidal silver may also accumulate in and change the color of the gums, eyes, and fingernails. Although this condition is thought to cause cosmetic and emotional damage, studies have not conclusively turned up other physical repercussions.

Some people believe that one of the more worrisome colloidal silver side effects is a marked dysfunction of the immune system. Silver in and of itself does not play a role in normal bodily functions, so the body is said to see it as a foreign substance. When any foreign substance enters the body, the immune system attempts to attack it. Silver does not break down easily or quickly in the human body, and so the immune system becomes taxed and will not be able to fight off other infections as efficiently as it normally would.

In addition to the immune system debate, there is some dispute over whether or not one of the colloidal silver side effects is physical damage in developing fetuses. Some feel that high levels of silver in the mother's body during pregnancy may cause developmental abnormalities to the neck, ears, or face of the child. Others contend that the use of colloidal silver can boost the mother's immunity, which would then lead to a healthier baby.

Although these three issues are considered common, there may be other potential colloidal silver side effects. Some of the milder symptoms may include digestion issues, fever, and headaches. More severe reactions may include seizures, drug interactions, or organ damage.
