What Are the Different Types of Corner Shower Enclosures?

Several variations on corner shower enclosures are available. The most basic feature is the shape of the enclosure. After shape, the materials used for the doors and frame distinguish one shower enclosure from another. Some enclosures also have unique features that set them apart from other types, such as colored glass or fixtures of a particular style. The price range of shower enclosures is very broad and can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.

A corner shower enclosure can be rectangular, triangular, round, or neo-angled. Neo-angled showers have five sides: two walls, two beveled sides, and a door. Some enclosures are a combination of shapes, for example, a triangular base with rounded, instead of flat, doors.

The surround of the enclosure is usually made of glass or a clear plastic, like acrylic. Acryclic is much cheaper than glass and not as brittle. Both glass and acrylic can be etched or frosted. This can add privacy to the surround or a unique design. Although not as common, some shower enclosures are available in a variety of colors as well.

Corner shower enclosures are popular because of their economical use of space. Triangular and round units typically take up the least amount of space, but not all corner shower enclosures are small. Many neo-angled and rectangular units are quite large and can comfortably accommodate two people, a bench, and additional fixtures.

Both framed and unframed corner shower enclosures are available. Frames can be made out of various types of metal, including stainless steel, brass, or other alloys. Due the the high level of moisture, frames have to be cared for regularly to prevent corrosion.

An unframed enclosure is supported by two or three brackets on the door and a mount to secure it to the surrounding walls. Some individuals prefer the minimalist design aesthetic of an unframed door. A well designed corner shower enclosure with an unframed door in clear glass can maximize the appearance of space in the bathroom.

Although typically more expensive, an unframed glass door is generally more attractive and easier to care for than a framed door. It also displays any decorative tile or marble work in the shower. An unframed surround also eliminates the possibility of metal corrosion.

The door or doors of corner shower enclosures usually open outward or slide together. Both kinds of doors are available on space saving and large showers. In a round shower, the sides of the shower sometimes function as the door as well. When in use, the shower doors are closed to form a cylinder.
