It can be difficult to select an anti-aging oil, because there are numerous options available on the market. Anti-aging oils can generally be divided into two camps: man-made and natural. Man-made oils contain many additives but are often stronger than their counterparts, while natural oils will often be additive-free and are usually gentler but may take longer to reduce aging signs. Man-made oil is usually safest if used on stronger skin, while natural oils are generally better tolerated by thin or sensitive skin types.

Man-made anti-aging oil is easy to find, because it lines the beauty section of many stores. These oils may contain several organic ingredients, but most also contain ingredients that are either altered forms of natural substances, diluted oils or chemical compounds. For example, Retin-A, which is the synthetic form of vitamin A, is frequently mixed into anti-aging oil to help repair collagen and elastin, reverse aging resulting from sun damage, and regulate oil production. Other chemicals, such as paraben and alcohol, may also be used in manmade oils as preservatives.

Natural anti-aging oils have long had a wide underground popularity. With an increasing concern for physical health and a high demand for organic products, many people are becoming interested in an alternative to common synthetic cosmetics. Natural cosmetics often contain a base of carrier oils but may also include coconut, walnut or rose hip oils — all of which are said to enhance appearance and reduce aging signs. Linseed, argan, fish, emu, grapeseed, evening primrose, and jojoba oils also are said to be beneficial anti-aging oils and find their way into many skincare and hair products.

Although cosmetics have long been the preferred method for reversing the signs of maturing skin, many people also have turned to anti-aging supplements. These supplements often contain many of the nutrients that can be found in most natural cosmetic oils. Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most popular type of youth-restoring supplements, but flaxseed, grapeseed and primrose oils are all said to be beneficial in fighting the look of aging and are available in supplement form.

An anti-aging diet can also be used to help restore or build a natural flow of nutritious oils within the body. Extra virgin olive oil is a favorite anti-aging oil of many dieters, but fish oil from fresh seafood may also be favorable. In addition, sunflower, sesame and safflower oils are said to help regenerate and strengthen skin cells and may easily be added to salads. A bowl of flaxseed-enriched cereal may help to minimize redness, improve health, and reduce rough or scaly patches on the skin.
