Estrogen dominance is a condition in which the amount of estrogen outweighs the amount of progesterone in the body. Many of the most common estrogen dominance symptoms include breast tenderness prior to the start of menstrual periods, mood swings, and severe bleeding or clotting. Although many of these symptoms may be uncomfortable, they are often considered harmless. More severe complications may occur and can include the formation of fibrocystic breast tissue or endometriosis, or reproductive issues like miscarriage or infertility.
Although many common estrogen dominance symptoms by themselves are not necessarily indicative of a hormone imbalance, it is believed that as few as six concurrent symptoms may be the result of too much estrogen in the body. Since several of the symptoms of this condition are so common, many people are unaware of a potential hormone imbalance. These symptoms can include premenstrual tenderness in the breasts, mood swings, weight gain or fluid retention, as well as headaches and menstrual cramps.
Some of the more moderate estrogen dominance symptoms are similar to the milder ones, but are often more intense. For example, headaches may be more severe or migraine-like in sensation, while menstrual cramps may be significantly more painful and may be followed by heavy bleeding or blood clots. Other moderate symptoms can include fatigue and depression, muscle and joint pain, hair loss, and a noticeable decrease in libido.
Physical problems or illnesses are sometimes linked to this condition and may be the cause of some of the more severe estrogen dominance symptoms. For instance, an excess of estrogen may lead to deficiencies of zinc and magnesium, may aid in the onset of osteoporosis or premenopausal bone loss, and can cause emotional issues such as anxiety or irritability. The risk of stroke and heart attack is said to increase in those suffering from estrogen dominance, as this condition may cause an increase of sodium in the body's cells, which may result in heightened blood pressure.
Estrogen dominance symptoms can be troublesome and sometimes dangerous. Fortunately, there are many ways to alleviate or even eliminate these symptoms. Natural or synthetic progesterone replacements in the form of pills, patches, and creams are widely available by prescription or over the counter in pharmacies or health food stores. Although these are easily accessible, it is important to speak with a doctor prior to using these hormones, as a doctor may be able to recommend proper dosage or better alternatives.
