Common side effects of Ramipril have been reported as trouble sleeping, nausea, cough, dizziness, headaches, itching, and even vomiting. These are fairly common side effects when it comes to prescription medications, and the majority of people will only experience a couple of them, if any at all. Ramipril, the generic form of Altace®, is a type of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is prescribed in conjunction with other medications to treat high blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. These common side effects can cause some problems for the people that are taking it, but some of them can be alleviated, or even eliminated, if a few simple precautions are taken. The common side effects that accompany the use of this drug are not severe, so there is no need to panic if a doctor suggests a prescription.

Nausea and vomiting are two of the most common side effects of Ramipril. These symptoms can cause problems eating, drinking, and can even limit the accomplishment of many tasks throughout the day. The easiest way to combat these common side effects are to drink lots of water with them, at least eight large glasses every day, and never take them on an empty stomach. The patient should eat directly before taking the pills with a meal that has some substance to it. Most nausea and vomiting can be avoided if these two simple steps are taken before and during the times that Ramipril is taken.

Two more common side effects of Ramipril are coughing and dizziness. Once again, these side effects can cause problems within daily living, but they can be eliminated by taking the medication with numerous glasses of water, eating when taking them, and by taking an over the counter headache medication when needed. As with the first two side effects, the majority of coughing and dizziness can be prevented by simply drinking water and eating solid substances. If these symptoms still persist, taking a mild pain reliever can aid reducing the headache and to lowering the levels of dizziness.

The last of the common side effects of Ramipril is itching. This is a side effect that may have to be dealt with, but it can be a sign of a more serious problem. If constant itching occurs a doctor should be consulted to ensure that an allergic reaction is not occurring. If it is, the prescription will have to be changed to another similar drug. If it is not, then the itching may have to be just ignored unless the doctor decides that a particular medicine or ointment can be used to help.
