Levoxyl® is a drug doctors often prescribe for the treatment of a condition called hypothyroidism or for enlargement of the thyroid gland. This medication is often well tolerated by those who take it. Some people, however, do develop side effects as a result of this medication. Some side effects include headaches, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, fever, and hot flashes; some people may also notice changes in menstruation, weight, and appetite. Levoxyl® has also been associated with hair loss, heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, gastrointestinal upset, and seizures.
In most cases, Levoxyl® side effects do not develop, and the majority of those who take it are able to tolerate the medication without any difficulty. When people do develop side effects of the medication, however, they are often minor. For example, a person who takes Levoxyl® may experience such side effects as increased appetite, weight loss, flushing, or nervousness. Additionally, insomnia may develop as one of the side effects of Levoxyl®. Whether or not a person views insomnia as a minor or serious side effect of the medication may depend on its severity and how long it lasts.
A woman who takes this medication may sometimes experience menstrual changes as one of the Levoxyl® side effects. For example, a woman may experience changes in the flow of her menses or its frequency. Many women may view this as a minor side effect, and it may not lead to permanent problems. In some cases, however, menstrual changes associated with Levoxyl® may also contribute to infertility. As such, this Levoxyl® side effect may be viewed as major in some cases.
Some of the more unpleasant Levoxyl® side effects include such symptoms as headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Some people may notice they feel hot all the time rather than just occasionally. An individual who takes this drug may also experience emotional changes and hair loss. Heart palpitations may develop as well.
Unfortunately, there are some serious side effects that may develop when a person takes Levoxyl®. They include such things as difficulty breathing, heart failure, high blood pressure, and seizures. These side effects are rare, however.
In addition to Levoxyl® side effects, a person may also develop an allergic reaction to the drug. In such a case, an individual may develop hives, trouble breathing, or a rash. Itching and swelling of the face or throat may also develop in relation to a Levoxyl® allergy.
