Benazepril is a prescription medication that is used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. Benazepril may be used alone or in combination with other medications. Common benazepril side effects include headache, dizziness, and coughing. More serious benazepril side effects are rare but may include muscle pain, irregular heartbeat, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Most benazepril side effects are mild, but any bothersome symptoms should be reported to a doctor for further evaluation.

Many patients do not experience any benazepril side effects, and those who do usually only experience mild side effects, which do not require discontinuation of the drug. The most common benazepril side effects include coughing, headache, and nausea. Dizziness and drowsiness are also commonly reported. Patients who do experience these side effects may notice a decline in these symptoms once the body has adjusted to the new medication.

Serious benazepril side effects are uncommon but should be reported to a doctor right away. Some of these potential side effects may include stomach pain, extreme nausea, or vomiting. Fever and sore throat may indicate the development of an infection. Yellowing of the skin or the white portions of the eyes could indicate a medical condition known as jaundice, which can lead to liver damage if left untreated.

A decrease in urine production could mean that the kidneys are not functioning normally, and blood or urine tests may need to be performed in order to check kidney function. Extreme dizziness may be a problem for some people taking this medication, and these dizzy spells can sometimes lead to fainting. Skin problems such as peeling of the skin or the presence of unexplained blisters may be among the possible benazepril side effects.

Severe allergic reactions are rare but potentially fatal benazepril side effects. If an allergic reaction is suspected, it should be treated as a medical emergency, and the patient should get immediate medical attention. Symptoms that may suggest that an allergic reaction is taking place include swelling, especially of the face, tongue, or throat. The presence of hives or an itchy, widespread rash may also indicate an allergic reaction. Chest pain or breathing difficulties may develop, requiring immediate medical efforts to keep the patient alive.

Patients who have a history of allergic reactions to benazepril or other medications must be especially careful when beginning new prescription drugs. In some cases, an injectible medication may be prescribed for the patient to carry at all times in case of other medication sensitivities that may lead to another allergic reaction.
