Common Avodart® side effects are typically mild and do not require immediate attention. They are primarily sexual problems, such as a loss in sex drive. Women and children can also experience several serious adverse symptoms, such as birth defects, if they handle Avodart® capsules.
The most common Avodart® side effects include difficulty ejaculating, a loss in sex drive, and lack of ability to have an erection. Some patients may also experience breast growth or tenderness. These mild effects do not require emergency medical care, but should be discussed with a doctor.
There are not many known severe Avodart® side effects. The most problematic effect would be an allergic reaction to the drug, which could include chest tightness, breathing problems, and hoarseness. An allergy may also cause itching, rash, hives, and swelling in the face. Should any of these symptoms appear as a result of taking the drug, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Avodart® side effects can also be a problem for women or children who come into contact with the drug. They should not take or handle the drug as it can be absorbed through the skin. It is particularly dangerous for pregnant women to handle Avodart® due to the risk of birth effects. Women and children who have had physical exposure should use soap and water to wash any area of the body that comes into contact with the drug.
In order to avoid an adverse reaction to the medication, it is particularly important that Avodart® is administered exactly as prescribed. The capsules should not be crushed, chewed, or opened, as the contents can irritate the throat, lips, and mouth. It is typically taken with a full glass of water.
Many doctors will observe patients during Avodart® treatment in order to ensure that the drug is effective and that there are no harmful side effects. This typically includes regular examination of the prostate. In order to ensure that prostate cancer has not developed, a doctor may also test a patient’s prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
Avodart® is the product name for dutasteride. The drug works by preventing testosterone from being converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a compound that is mostly synthesized in the prostate gland and which can cause an enlarged prostate. It is typically prescribed to encourage the flow of urine in patients with a dysfunctional prostate. The drug is most commonly used to treat prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition which affects patients who have an enlarged prostate. Patients can often avoid prostate surgery by taking Avodart®.
