People interested in clearing their bodies of toxins to improve their overall health may choose to use a detox program. A variety of plans can be used, with different recommendations on what to eat and drink, whether or not to exercise, and use of additional steps such as spa treatments or colon cleanses to clear extra toxins from the body. There are some basic tips, however, that should be part of any healthy detox plan.
A healthy detox is a relatively short-term endeavor. Those undertaking the process should realize it is only meant to last for a limited period, typically between a week and a month. A detox that goes on for too long may begin to cause damage to the body by depriving it of key nutrients.
The process should also not be undertaken too frequently. Two to three times per year should be sufficient. Detoxification is a tool to promote better health. It is not an overall lifestyle change.
While some programs call for extreme measures in regards to eating and drinking, a healthy detox typically incorporates healthy foods. Organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein from nuts and beans are all healthy choices which can be part of a detox program, while intake of things like refined sugar, processed foods, and alcohol should be avoided. One should drink plenty of water to aid in the flushing of toxins; eight glasses a day is typically recommended. Herbal teas and juices may also be included. To ensure sufficient nutrients are consumed, taking a multivitamin can also be a good choice.
The detoxification process may be somewhat hard on the body, so excessive, stressful exercise is not usually recommended during this time. Some light aerobic activity can be a part of a healthy detox, however. Walking, biking, or easy jogging can provide relaxation, promote deep breathing, and contribute to an overall feeling of well-being. Strength training such as weight lifting should generally be avoided during this time.
In addition to limiting activity, it is important for the body to get plenty of rest during detoxification. Getting enough sleep each night is necessary for the body to repair itself as the toxins are cleared away. Those who want a healthy detox should aim for at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. To accomplish this, it may be useful to incorporate some relaxation techniques into one's routine during detox as well, to reduce anxiety and produce calmness.
