Juvederm® is a type of dermal filler that can fill in lines and wrinkles in the face and reshape parts of the face such as the lips. Juvederm® in the lips can be beneficial because it provides instant results and a natural-looking fullness. It is often recommended over Restylane® because it requires a less painful procedure and is sometimes thought to produce more natural results. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm® are popular because they require little healing time.

Many people choose to have injections of Juvederm® in the lips. These injections are supposed to add volume to the lips while leaving them supple and natural feeling. Many find that one of the benefits of Juvederm® over traditional plastic surgery is that these injections are non-invasive and not permanent. Also, unlike more invasive procedures, results can be seen immediately after the procedure instead of waiting for healing to occur. Juvederm® in the lips may last anywhere from three to eight months, although with regular touch ups, it may last longer.

There are three different types of Juvederm®: Juvederm® 18, Juvederm® 24 and Juvederm® 30. Juvederm® 18 is used for people with fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes. Juvederm® 24 is used to treat individuals with more severe wrinkles around the entire face, including the cheeks and nose. Finally, Juvederm® 30 treats deep depressions and wrinkles and is used to plump or volumize different aspects of the face. When injecting Juvederm® in the lips, Juvederm® 24 or 30 is used.

One alternative type of dermal filler for the lips is the product Restylane®. Restylane® has been on the market several years longer than Juvederm® and is another choice for lip augmentation by injection. Some consider Juvederm® to be better than Restylane® for lip augmentation because Restylane® is a stiffer, firmer filler and may create lips that look rigid, while Juvederm® is comparatively more fluid and may create more smooth, natural looking results. Restylane® may be more appropriate for use on other areas of the face. Juvederm® is also less painful to administer and results are instantaneous, compared to Restylane® which can take up to one week to show full results.

Possible side effects of Juvederm® injections include redness, tenderness, pain, and bruising at the injection site. Other side effects are swelling, firmness and bumps around the area. Skin discoloration may also occur. Side effects are usually temporary or reversible.
