Pole aerobics is a type of exercise that involves climbing and dancing around a fitness pole. The exercise pole used may be a removable pole that stands several feet high or a pole that is secured at both ends by the floor and the ceiling. As a popular exercise, pole aerobics classes and videos are made available to men and women, but are more popular among the latter.

Aerobic exercise helps improve blood circulation and develop lung stamina and is a recommended form of healthy exercise. Pole aerobics, in particular, is considered to be a good method of toning the arm, leg and core muscles, as well as helping participants burn calories. This type of exercise may be performed in groups or may be engaged in singularly.

Most people engage in pole aerobics while listening to music. At the same time, dance routines can be incorporated into the exercise, which adds an element of fun for a lot of people. Often, classes are led by live fitness instructors, but pole dancing videos are also popular among those who prefer to engage in this type of workout at home.

At one time, pole dancing was considered to be an activity solely for exotic dancers. Men and women working in these professions generally dance around a pole on stage before a live audience. Considered by many to be a unique art form, in recent years pole aerobics has become a popular form of exercise and some even compete professionally and view it as a sport.

The primary equipment used in pole aerobics is the exercise pole. Many such poles are portable in that they can be transported to multiple locations and stored away when not in use. Other poles, however, are installed in studios or at performance venues and are permanently attached to the floor and ceiling where they are located. In either form, a designated exercise pole is sturdy enough to support a person's body weight when performing pole routines and exercises.

While pole aerobics is often seen as fun, it can also be an intense workout if done properly. Upper-body strength is of particular importance during a workout as a lot of routines led by instructors involve climbing the pole and using the hands to support the body while sliding down or dangling from the pole. Pole aerobics can be enjoyed by people of all ages and sizes who are considered healthy enough to engage in mild to moderate aerobic exercise.
