How do I Convert MKV to VOB?

Matroksa video (MKV) is a multimedia, open source container format for video, audio and subtitle streams. Before MKV files can be burned to DVD, an encoder must be used to convert MKV to VOB or Video Object files.

VOB is a container format for audio, video and subtitle streams used specifically for DVD. VOB is part of the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standard, with unique specifications that set it apart from other MPEG streams.

DVD files also include Information or IFO files that provide the DVD player with navigational data. IFO files let the player know where chapters begin, for example, and point to video, audio and subtitle steams that reside on the disc. In case an IFO file should become unreadable due to physical damage to the disc’s surface or improper handling, copies of the IFO are present in the form of Backup (BUP) files. When you convert MKV to VOB, the program will generate the necessary IFO and BUP files along with two title set (TS) directories: VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.

A software program called an encoder or converter will take the original MKV file and "translate" it to the VOB files necessary for DVD burning. This process might take awhile depending on the size of the file, chosen software and quality settings. Some programs do not include a burner, but rely on a secondary installed program such as ImgBurn©, while others convert and burn the DVD files to disc directly.

When you convert MKV to VOB, you might also like to create a personalized menu for your disc. This functionality is included in many burners. One can use program settings to incorporate chapters for faster navigation, choose a still shot to represent each chapter, and assign each chapter a name. The background image can also be customized or changed, as can the basic design of the menu, along with font style and colors. Options and features vary between programs.

Windows® and Mac® users might try E.M. Free MKV Video2Dvd© to convert MKV to VOB, create customized menus, and burn projects to disc. This program can also convert other file types to DVD, but will leave a watermark on all but the MKV to DVD conversion unless the upgrade is purchased. It boasts an "easy mode" with drag-and-drop capability and one-button functionality for those who don’t wish to deal with advanced settings.

Other freeware programs for Windows® include eRightSoft’s Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer, better known as SUPER©, TrustFm’s AVI2DVD©, and DVD Flick©. Linux® (and Mac©) users might try Avidemux©. For more program choices to convert MKV to VOB use any search engine and include your operating system with the query.
