This is so that the container can be squarely placed on top of the skid without having too much extra space on either side. It can also be easier to secure the drum to this size pallet using shrink wrap or metal banding.

Take into consideration the country you are shipping to when deciding what shipping pallet to use. This is because different countries may have a different amount of space allotted in their warehouses for storage, based upon the average size of skid found there. If you are sending freight to Europe, you may want to choose a skid that is 39.37 inches (100 cm) wide and 47.24 inches (120 cm) long. If you are transporting goods to Australia, one that is around 44.88 inches (116.5 cm) square might be ideal.

Think about the size of vehicle you might be placing goods on when deciding pallet dimensions. If you are loading a small truck, you may want to find one that is shorter in length than if you are loading a tractor-trailer. Rail cars and ships could also have space restrictions, so check with the carrier beforehand if possible.
