How do I Choose the Most Effective Cure for Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is an infection of the nail and is the most common type of nail abnormality. It can take up to a year to cure toenail fungus, also know as onychomycosis, and in some cases antifungal medications or surgery is needed. A physician will normally begin treating the fungus by suggesting that an antifungal lacquer or ointment be used as a cure for toenail fungus. There are also many natural remedies and homemade solutions that are believed to be helpful in curing toenail fungus or preventing the spread of the fungus to other nails.

Fungi thrive in moist, dark spaces, making the feet the perfect environment for growth. Usually the fungi, known as dermatophytes, infect the nail through small cuts in the nail or through small spaces between the nail and nail bed. People with poor circulation in their feet are more susceptible to contracting a toenail fungus, as the immune system is less likely to defend against the infection.

Antifungal medications, such as Lamisil® and Sporanox®, should be taken only under the direction of a physician. A person will need to have a blood test prior to taking the medication, and the physician may need to monitor the person’s health throughout the six to 12 weeks of treatment because of the serious risks and complications that can occur. Side effects of this cure for toenail fungus include liver damage, rashes, headaches and diarrhea. These antifungal medications allow the new nail to grow free of the infection, and so the results are only seen once a completely health nail has grown in. Surgery as a cure for toenail fungus is the most invasive option, because during the procedure the nail is completely removed and the part of the toe that grows the nail is destroyed.

An antifungal lacquer is a type of nail polish that is applied to the nail and skin daily to remove the fungus. Usually, the polish is applied for a week, then the person will remove the build-up of polish, wash and dry the nail thoroughly, and begin reapplying the polish. This process can take up to a year to rid the nail of the fungus. Topical ointments and creams are also available for use as a cure for toenail fungus. Filing down the top of the nail is recommended, as it will allow the medication to be more easily absorbed.

Natural and homemade remedies are also effective toenail fungus cures, and they do not have the risks of severe side effects associated with oral anti-fungal medications. Tea tree oil is a naturally occurring anti-fungal, and it is one of the most popular alternatives to chemical cures. Tea tree oil can be combined with other ingredients such as olive oil, thyme oil and lavender to treat the fungus. Soaking the infected nail in Listerine® or applying Vicks VapoRub® are also popular home remedies. Some people recommend using vinegar, apple cider vinegar or Clorox® solution mixes to rid the nail of the fungus.

This is truly an informative post, especially for individuals who are looking for remedies for their toenail fungus.

I used to have toenail fungus and it was such a horrible experience. I can't wear sandals and slippers whenever I go out because of my yellow nails.

What I did to cure my infected nails was I regularly soak my feet in ACV foot soaks. I also applied Fungusil, which is an anti-fungal product, directly to the infected region.
