Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatments such as hairstyling, make-up application, manicures, pedicures, et al. If you are considering a career in cosmetology, you will need some sort of training to prepare you. Although there are a few positions, such as a hair-shampooer, where on-the-job training will suffice, most positions will require you to obtain a state license to practice your skills.

All states require a certain number of hours participating in hands on practice in order to obtain your license, however the amount will vary slightly from state to state. Learning cosmetology skills and gaining practice to apply for your license are done by attending a cosmetology school. There are a few important steps that you should take and factors to consider that will help you to choose the right cosmetology school.

First, take a day to visit salons in the area that you would like to work when you finish cosmetology school. If you take the time to speak to salon owners and cosmetologists who have been in the business for awhile, they will tell you about the best programs in your area. The best way to become successful in your desired field is to imitate someone who has already become successful. Because of the extensive knowledge of the industry that an owner or very experienced cosmetologist has she will reveal pros and cons about your possible choices that you didn’t consider.

After you have done some research with salon owners or experienced cosmetologists, you must review the credentials of the school or schools you are considering. Contact your state licensing bureau and find out which cosmetology schools have programs that pass the state requirements for licensing. You must only consider schools that are approved by your state or you will be wasting your money.

Next, you should consider what type of program that you would like. There are many private beauty institutes or academies that will teach you the skills you need to know to pass your exam, but you will only get a certificate of completion from their program. Other programs will train you for the exam, but you will also learn about cosmetology theory and be rewarded with an Associate’s Degree when you are finished. Both types of programs will allow you to gain employment as a cosmetologist; however, having associate’s degree will benefit you in the case that you would like to continue your education in the future.

Money is always a factor to consider when choosing a cosmetology school. If have money for tuition in the bank, your choices are more plentiful. If you are hoping to take out a student loan to help assist you with the cost of your education, you will need to choose a cosmetology school that is accredited by the United Stated Department of Education. Accredited schools will have federal student aid available in the forms of loans and grants.

Additionally, some cosmetology schools will allow you to specialize in areas, such as esthiology or electrology. If you are considering specialization, make sure the cosmetology school you are considering offers these options. Before making your final decision about cosmetology school, you should contact the school of your choice to take a tour. While you are there take time to meet with someone in the Office of Admissions and a financial aid specialist.
