To become a security receptionist, you will typically need training in both office support tasks as well as security procedures and techniques. In some cases, you will be trained on the job in these skills, although in many cases you will need at least some office administration and security experience before you can be hired. Some security companies specialize in placing security receptionists in job roles. You may want to locate these companies in your area and ask about whether you can train to become a security receptionist through their program. As you will be working in the area of security, you may be subjected to an intensive background check process and, depending on the jurisdiction where you live, may also need to be licensed or certified by a professional or government agency.
Many businesses and organizations are concerned about maintaining a safe, secure facility for their employees and guests. Traditionally, receptionists have been responsible for providing some control over those who enter a building by virtue of the fact that they sit at the front desk and typically greet those who enter the area. Unfortunately, however, not all receptionists have the skills necessary to control access to the premises or investigate possible breaches of security. Instead of hiring a separate security guard or officer to provide these services, some companies now hire a security receptionist who has the ability to perform administrative tasks while being able to maintain a secure office and effectively handle any threats to property or the well-being of those who work in or are visiting the office.
Before you can become a security receptionist, you will likely need to earn a high school diploma or its equivalent. It is often to your advantage to gain solid office administration skills as well, such as working with computers and software, filing, and handling correspondence. Some vocational schools and community college programs offer training programs in all of these areas, as do adult education programs.
Expect to also complete a security officer training program before you become a security receptionist. In some cases, you may be able to take a training course through your employer or placement agency. You may also find a vocational school that provides security training as well. Depending on where you live as well as whether you will be carrying a weapon, you may also need to be licensed or registered with a governmental agency before you can begin working as a security receptionist.
