Group product managers work with teams composed of leaders from different departments within an organization to drive the production and sales of certain products. For example, group product managers might meet with engineers and designers during the early stages of a process and discuss goals and concerns dictated by executives and high level managers then meet with marketers to discuss how they would like to promote the features, benefits, and overall images of products. To become a group product manager, you should first earn a degree in business, although in some cases you should direct your education to meet the needs of the particular field or industry in which you would like to work. This means that if you are interested in becoming a product manager in the software industry, you should take courses in fields such as computer science and computer engineering. Once you earn the necessary credentials, you should make sure that you get experience in all stages of a product development cycle.
To become a group product manager, you should go out of your way to get as much experience in all the different facets of your field as possible. In most cases, this means that you should take an entry level position that places you within a production cycle, but which also gives you opportunities for promotion. For instance, a person who would like to become a group product manager might begin in a sales position. Once he or she understands what makes certain products desirable and which demographics make up a strong customer base, this person might then move into a marketing position, and from there learn about the details of design and production.
A person who wants to become a group product manager should be an expert when it comes to products that he or she oversees. While this person might not need to have the level of technical expertise of an engineer, for example, he or she should at least understand basic processes and perspectives about which methods of production are most effective and why. He or she should be able to consult with technical experts and learn how to process and make use of advice.
Aside from being a product expert, a person who wants to become a group product manager also must be an effective leader. In most instances, individuals receive leadership or management training in their academic business programs. It also is a good idea to perfect business communication skills such as business writing and public speaking.
