A glass engineer is a person who studies the properties of glass, figures out new uses for glass, and otherwise tests the material for structural integrity or other qualities. In order to become a glass engineer, you will need to first finish a high school education or equivalent qualification and develop adequate math, computer, and basic science skills. You will then need to go on to college to earn a bachelor's degree or higher qualification that will prepare you to become a glass engineer. Structural engineering, mechanical engineering, or other engineering degrees will most adequately prepare you for this career.
While in college, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with glass engineering topics and concepts. You can ask an academic advisor or instructor how to get such knowledge and experience. While in college, you will also need to develop computer skills that will be useful once you become a glass engineer. Computer aided drafting (CAD) skills are good skills to develop, and you may want to spend some time learning how to use various computer numeric control (CNC) machines, as you may end up fashioning glass this way once you become a glass engineer.
Seeking out internships while you are in college is one of the best ways to develop your skills even further and establish valuable contacts within the industry. Career placement offices at colleges and universities will be able to help you find internships, and in some cases, your academic advisor or instructors will be able to help as well. Internships are generally summer programs, though others may take place during the school year as well. You probably won't get paid for your work, but you will develop important skills and knowledge that will help you secure employment after graduation. If glass engineering internships are not available, try to find part-time work with a company in the glass industry.
Be sure to do some research while you are in college into the various qualifications you will need to meet in order to become a glass engineer. You may need certain licenses or certifications in order to work in a professional setting, and these qualifications can vary by region. Earn these qualifications as soon after graduation as possible, and start your search for jobs in the field of glass engineering. Draw up a resume that highlights your experience and education as it pertains to glass engineering and submit this document, along with a cover letter, to various employers in the field.
