In order for you to become a furniture mover, you must meet a few points of criteria that will allow you to perform the task. There are typically no educational requirements needed to become a furniture mover, however, you must be strong and in good physical condition. In most cases, you will need a valid driver's license and have the ability to read and write. The first step is locating a furniture store that offers delivery and filling out an application for employment. You must also be able to pass a physical exam in order to become a furniture mover in most areas.

The job of a furniture mover is one of heavy lifting and often carrying large pieces of furniture up stairways and through cramped spaces. There are several attributes you must possess if you would like to become a furniture mover that are much more involved than simply being strong. You must have good communication skills to be able to effectively deal with customers and fellow store employees. You must also be trustworthy in order to be allowed into customers' homes. In some situations, you may also be required to be insured and bonded as well in order to be insurable as a driver of a company delivery vehicle.

As a mover, you will also want to have a clean and respectable appearance as you are often the image of what customers think about your company. While some tattoos are acceptable by some employers, large numbers of tattoos, piercings or anything that could be considered controversial or excessive may keep you from being hired by an employer. You must also have the ability to find addresses and read street signs. This goes hand in hand with possessing a driver's license. When driving a delivery or moving van, you might also be required to operate a stick shift truck.

Due to the nature of the job, one of the most important attributes for you to become a furniture mover is to have the ability to work well as a team member. Most furniture requires a minimum of two people to safely move. Once you have submitted an application and have had an interview, you will usually be required to pass a physical exam, criminal background check and drug test to be considered for the position. Once hired, you may also be required to work part-time for a probationary period as you become skilled at being a furniture mover.
