How Do I Become a Creative Writer?

There are many different ways to become a creative writer. Many people simply write for the love of it, to express themselves and tell stories. Other people want to become a creative writer in order to get published and earn income at it. The most important method for becoming a creative writer is simply to write, all the time, as much as possible; the more practice you have at writing, the better a writer you will become. In addition to consistent practice, another important thing to do is to read constantly, and find other writers who inspire you and motivate you to keep writing.

If you want to become a creative writer, experts generally recommend that you do your best to find time each day to write, even if it is just a few minutes. It is a good idea to try to find the time of day you feel most inspired to write; like anything else, some people do better at such tasks in the morning, while others are "night people" and enjoy working in the evening, or even very late at night. There are different methods for practicing writing each day. Some people try to complete specific exercises, such as in a writer's guide; others will keep a daily journal; while others may work on a specific story idea.

There is no right or wrong way to become a creative writer. Many people employ many different methods of writing practice throughout the day, in fact. It is also a good idea to carry a pocket-sized notebook and jot down ideas when they occur to you, to make sure you don't forget them later. Some people also find that taking a creative writing class is a good way to get some of the basics down and help inspire some creative ideas. In addition, it generally offers built-in opportunities to receive feedback on your work, such as in a workshop setting, which can really be invaluable.

In addition to writing all the time, anyone who wants to become a creative writer needs to read just as much. If you have a specific genre that you know you want to write within, then try to read many different selections from that genre. Otherwise, try to read as much as possible, everything from the classics to contemporary literature. You certainly don't want to copy anyone, but published writers can be an excellent source of inspiration and can teach you a great deal about writing an effective story.
