In order to become a channel marketing manager, a candidate will normally be expected to hold a bachelor's degree in a business discipline. In some cases, another discipline related to communication or to the specific industry in which the company operates may also be acceptable. While it might possible to secure employment directly after finishing bachelor level studies, appropriate prior work experience is often required by employers to become a channel marketing manager.

A channel marketing manager is responsible for maintaining strong and productive relations with all members of the distribution channel. The distribution channel is made up of any number of resellers who move a product from the original company to the end consumer. Previous work experience with a marketing or sales focus can help one become a channel marketing manager. The most relevant experience, however, will be that gained in other roles that dealt particularly with distribution channels.

The responsibilities of a distribution channel marketing manager are quite distinct from that of product marketing staff working in direct sales. To become a channel marketing manager, a good candidate will be able to demonstrate to employers that he or she is uniquely equipped to meet a wide range of challenges, as this work requires a diverse skill set.

Communication and organizational skills are among those a channel marketing manager must possess to ensure that resellers have received all the training and information they might need in order to adequately promote their products to consumers. Creativity and critical thinking must be applied in identifying and providing solutions for any weaknesses in the channel. A distribution channel marketing manager will also often be in charge of directing a team, and he or she will need to have strong leadership skills to do this as well as to provide high-quality training and guidance to resellers.

As this job role can also call for budgeting large funds, a job candidate aspiring to become a channel marketing manager should also be able to present experience that has required strong math and financial planning skills. The manager must be able to allocate funds wisely between marketing campaigns, training and promotional materials for resellers, travel expenses to trade shows or conventions, and many other costs. A candidate should also have attained an expert knowledge of the many existing types of distribution models and resellers. Many companies also seek applicants with a special understanding of the unique dynamics of their particular industries.
